The day of surgery, early in the morning, as specified by the hospital.

When will they draw my blood tests?

Probably the day before.

Will I have to have a blood transfusion?

No.

How long will I stay in the hospital?

This is done as a day surgery, so you come to the hospital (or the surgery center) and go home the same day of the surgery.

When do I start moving my fingers?

The same day as the surgery.

Will I have a lot of tubes in me?

There will be an IV, but it will be removed before you go home.

How long does it take the doctor to do the surgery?

About 30 minutes to one hour.

Does it hurt a lot?

No. The pain is very well-controlled by the pain pills. You will be sent home with a prescription.

Can a family member stay with me after surgery?

Yes.

What can't I do when I get home?

Try to take it easy for 2-3 days. We usually tell people to go from couch to bed to dinner table, and to keep their arm elevated as much as possible.

You will have a half-cast and sling on, but we remove that after your first office visit. You do not have to change your bandages.

Do I have to have antibiotics after surgery?

No.

Does Mid State Orthopaedics participate in Medicare?

Yes.

When do I see the doctor again?

We will make an office appointment for you, for about 5 days after the surgery. We will remove the cast then, and possibly will start physical therapy.
